Seasonal Safety
Each season of the year brings different activities, moments to look forward to, and safety needs. Spring has sports and family walks or gardening and allergies (oh no!) while summer may have some beach vacations, camping, or weekends inside in the air conditioning. Whatever you do throughout the year, be sure to keep safety in mind by following these tips!
Safety Tips
- Make sure children are wearing the correct clothing for the season in order to help regulate their body temperature.
- Some children might have quite specific needs when it comes to clothing comfort. Do your best to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer as possible!
- Always use sunscreen, even in the winter!
- Teach your teen drivers that driving in different seasons means learning different skills and techniques (i.e.: driving in the snow or sleet is not the same as driving in the rain!)
- Avoid hypothermia (too cold) and hyperthermia (too hot) by keeping your kids inside the house when it feels too cold (which may depend on a combination of the temperature and the wind chill) or too hot (which may depend on a combination of the temperature and the humidity) outside, and remember to never leave children unattended in a car.
- Remind children to wipe their shoes off (or take them off completely) when they come inside from rain or snow in order to decrease the risk of slips or falls.
