School Bus Safety

Elementary school boy at the front of the school bus queueSchool buses are the safest mode of transportation to get children to and from school, because they are the most regulated vehicle on the road. The greatest risk to a child is around approaching or leaving a bus, rather than riding on it. School bus safety is a place where road safety meets pedestrian safety, and we must all be aware of the rules of the road to protect our vulnerable populations.

Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law

  • Motorists must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
  • Motorists must stop when they are behind a bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped.
  • Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached safety.
  • If physical barriers such as grassy medians, guide rails or concrete median barriers separate oncoming traffic from the bus, motorists in the opposing lanes may proceed without stopping.
  • Do not proceed until all the children have reached a place of safety.

Safety Tips

For Parents:

  • Walk children to the bus stop and wait with them at least six feet away from the curb until the bus arrives, at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
  • Teach kids to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting off, to use the handrails when exiting, and to always walk in front of the bus.
  • If your child needs to cross the street after exiting the bus, he or she should take five giant steps in front of the bus (about ten feet), make eye contact with the bus driver and cross when the driver indicates it’s safe.
  • Teach children to look left, right and left again before crossing the street.
  • If your children drop something, they should tell the bus driver and make sure the bus driver is able to see them before they pick it up.

For Drivers:

  • Drivers should always follow the speed limit and slowdown in school zones and near bus stops.
  • Learn and obey the school bus laws in your state: slow down and stop if you are driving near a school bus that is flashing yellow or red lights. This means the bus either is preparing to stop (yellow) or already stopped (red), and children are getting on or off the bus.
  • When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school.
  • When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, watch out for young people who may be thinking about getting to school, but may not be thinking of getting there safely.
  • Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in neighborhood.
  • Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops.
  • Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic.
