Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act (H.R.973 Text )This bill would require the Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue a final consumer product safety rule for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in micro mobility devices, such as electric bikes and scooters. Specifically, the rule would require manufacturers and distributors of such products to comply with the applicable safety standards jointly established by the American National Standards Institute, the Standards Council of Canada, and UL Solutions Inc.

Permanent Exemption of Engine Compartment Portion of Skills Testing Requirement for School Bus Drivers. (H.R. 2360, text currently unavailable) This legislation would permanently extend the exemption from the engine compartment portion of the pre-trip vehicle inspection skills testing requirement for school bus drivers.

Providing Health Insurance Benefits for Outpatient and Inpatient Items Related to Congenital Anomaly or Birth Defects (S.1677, text currently unavailable) This bill would provide health insurance benefits for outpatient and inpatient items and services related to the diagnosis and treatment of a congenital anomaly or birth defect.

Expanding Access To Birth Centers and Effective Payment Models for Birth Center Care (S.1598, text currently unavailable) This bill would address maternity care shortages and promote optimal maternity outcomes by expanding access to birth centers and exploring more effective payment models for birth center care, and for other purposes.

Expanding Educational Opportunities for Midwives and Addressing Maternity Care Shortages (S.1599, text currently unavailable) This bill would address maternity care shortages and promote optimal maternity outcomes by expanding educational opportunities for midwives, and for other purposes.

Reauthorization of the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of 1990 (H.R.2282, text currently unavailable) This legislation would reauthorize the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of 1990, which would improve access to relative caregivers, and for other purposes.

Food Allergy Information Included in Training Modules for Local Food Service Personnel (S.1469, text currently unavailable) This legislation would amend the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 to include food allergy information in existing training modules for local food service personnel.

Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 (HR 2617 actual text) This legislation includes a number of child safety measures, including:

  • STURDY (Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth) Act This bill requires the Consumer Product Safety Commission to revise the safety standards for freestanding clothing storage units such as a dressers, bureaus, or chests of drawers. Such standards must include specified testing related to tip overs and new warning requirements for all such products entering the U.S. market. 
  • Reauthorization of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act, and expansion of associated Pool Safely grant program to include Indian tribes as eligible grant recipients
  • INFORM Consumers Act, taking steps to address counterfeit and defective products sold by third-party sellers via online marketplaces;
  • Requirements that public housing agencies and owners of federally-supported housing must install smoke detectors in their units.

Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (S. 2938 actual text) This legislation requires background checks for firearms purchasers under 21, establishes first ever federal criminal offenses and penalties for people who purchase guns on behalf of others (usually people who are banned from buying one on their own), clarifies who needs a federal license to buy/sell firearms, and many other common sense firearm safety regulations. It also expands funding for many health-based services, including mental health and suicide prevention programs.

Safe Sleep for Babies Act of 2021 (HR 3182 actual text) This legislation makes it unlawful to manufacture, sell, or distribute crib bumpers or inclined sleepers for infants.

Scarlett’s Sunshine on Sudden Unexpected Death Act -2020 (S. 1130 actual text) (H.R. 2271 actual text) This legislation improves national guidelines and data consistency on sudden unexpected infant death (SUDS/SIDS) cases; authorizes millions of dollars of grant funding annually; and establishes new monitoring measures with Congress.
