Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 (HR 2617 actual text) This legislation includes a number of child safety measures, including:
- STURDY (Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth) Act This bill requires the Consumer Product Safety Commission to revise the safety standards for freestanding clothing storage units such as a dressers, bureaus, or chests of drawers. Such standards must include specified testing related to tip overs and new warning requirements for all such products entering the U.S. market.
- Reauthorization of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act, and expansion of associated Pool Safely grant program to include Indian tribes as eligible grant recipients
- INFORM Consumers Act, taking steps to address counterfeit and defective products sold by third-party sellers via online marketplaces;
- Requirements that public housing agencies and owners of federally-supported housing must install smoke detectors in their units.
Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (S. 2938 actual text) This legislation requires background checks for firearms purchasers under 21, establishes first ever federal criminal offenses and penalties for people who purchase guns on behalf of others (usually people who are banned from buying one on their own), clarifies who needs a federal license to buy/sell firearms, and many other common sense firearm safety regulations. It also expands funding for many health-based services, including mental health and suicide prevention programs.
Safe Sleep for Babies Act of 2021 (HR 3182 actual text) This legislation makes it unlawful to manufacture, sell, or distribute crib bumpers or inclined sleepers for infants.
Scarlett’s Sunshine on Sudden Unexpected Death Act -2020 (S. 1130 actual text) (H.R. 2271 actual text) This legislation improves national guidelines and data consistency on sudden unexpected infant death (SUDS/SIDS) cases; authorizes millions of dollars of grant funding annually; and establishes new monitoring measures with Congress.
